Chester “Chet” Gigas, 88, of 28 Willow Street in Tilton died suddenly at his home, Thursday, February 25, 2010. Chet was born in Laconia, March 24, 1921, son of John and Mary (Kolano) Gigas. He graduated from Laconia High School, class of 1940. Prior to entering the service Chet worked at the former Scott and Williams Company in Laconia as a tapping machine operator. He had been a resident of Tilton for over 67 years. For many years Chet worked as a supervisor for various road construction firms. A favorite pastime of Chet’s was golf. He was a longtime member of the Den Brae Golf Club in Sanbornton. He was a member of the American Legion Post, # 49 of Northfield and Life Member of the VFW Post #1670 in Laconia. During WW II Chet served with the U. S. Army from 1942 until 1945. He was discharged as a Staff Sergeant, serving with Battery A 464th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion. He was involved with the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. Chet was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Tilton. He was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite M. (Rhodes) Gigas in 2009. His family includes,

10 great-grandchildren

Calling hours will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road in Tilton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary of The Assumption Church, Chestnut St., Tilton, NH. Burial and military honors will follow in St. John Cemetery in Tilton.
