Frederick J. Walsh, 78, of 296 Webster Lake Road in Franklin died Saturday, December 26, 2009 following a period of failing health. He was born in Beverly, MA, February 27, 1931, son of the late Frederick J. and Theresa R. (Molloy) Walsh. Fred moved with his parents to Swampscott, MA where he lived until 1946. The family moved to Winchester, MA when Fred’s father returned from WW II. While living in Swampscott Fred attended the Hadley School through Junior High. It was during this time that Fred developed his life-long love of music. He learned to play both the accordion and the trombone. He graduated from Winchester High School in 1949. While in High School Fred was president of his junior class, president of the Student Council and President of the High School Band. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1953 with a Degree in History. He was a member of the XO Fraternity, active in the Dartmouth Band, and played lead trombone with the Barbary Coast Orchestra. Fred also played with many traditional jazz bands. Following graduation, Fred enlisted in the Army and in 1954 was commissioned a 2nd Lt. upon graduating from artillery OCS at Fort Sill, OK. From 1954 to 1956 Fred was stationed at Fort Bliss, TX as an Executive Officer with the Replacement Training Command. In 1956 he joined IBM as a salesman and in 1958 left to enter New England School of Law. As an attorney Fred practiced law from 1962 to 1985 when he joined the faculty of Franklin Pierce College (University) as a Professor of Law and Accounting. In 1968 Fred married Jean Pierce who died of cancer in 1997. In 2000, Fred married Bronwyn Asplund, a New Hampshire attorney and moved to Franklin, NH. Until a few years ago, Fred was very active in music of all types. He played with marching bands, concert bands, dance bands and most notably with the East Bay City Jazz Band and Stan McDonald’s Blue Horizon Jazz Band. He was an active parishioner of St. Paul Church in Franklin and was a 4th Degree Member of the K of C.

A Mass will be celebrated Thursday, December 31st at 10:00 AM at St. Paul Church, School St., in Franklin. Burial will be at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery, Acton, MA
Arrangements are under the care of the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home in Tilton, NH.
